(James), an excellent Flemish painter of landscapes, born at Anvers. De Piles says, the difference between his pictures and those of Titian consist rather in the countries represented, than in the goodnes of the pieces; the principles of both are the same, and the colouring alike good and regular. He painted for Rubens, of whom he learned the most essential part of his art. The elector Palatine employed him at Heidelberg; and thence going to Paris, he painted the Louvre, under the reign of Lewis XIII. and acquired great reputation by his pictures. He died at Paris, in 1659.
