a populous and flourishing town of Ayrshire in Scotland, famous for its manufacture of broad cloth and hardware. It gave the title of earl to the noble family of Boyd, residing in this neighbourhood. This title was forfeited by the late earl, who, by engaging in the rebellion of 1745, was deprived of his honours, and lost his life on the scaffold. His son, however, who served in the king's army, afterwards succeeded to the earldom of Errol, a title much more ancient and honourable.
