LEWARDEN, a handsome, rich, and strong town of the United Provinces, capital of Ottergouw, Wettergow, Sevenwolden, and West Friesland. It was the usual place of residence of the Stadtholder; and in buildings, as well public as private, is very magnificent. It has several canals running through the streets, which are of great service to their trade, especially as they are continued to the sea and to the most considerable towns of the province. E.
