LIBERTY, in Pagan worship, one of the blessings deified by the Romans, was represented in the form of a virgin clothed in white, holding a sceptre in her right hand and a cap in her left. To this imaginary goddess they erected temples and altars, where they offered up petitions for the preservation of their liberties.
