(Philibert de), one of the most celebrated architects of the 16th century, was born at Lyons. Queen Catharine de Medicis gave him the superintendence of buildings; and he had the direction of those of the Louvre, the Tuileries, the castle of St Anet, St Germaine, and other edifices erected by her orders. He wrote several books of architecture, which are extant; and died about the year 1577.
