a large province of France; bounded on the north, by Burgundy; on the east, by Dauphiny, Bresse, and the principality of Dombes; on the south, by Vivarais and Velay; and on the west, by Auvergne and a small part of Bourbonnois. It comprehends Lower Lyonnaise, Beaujolais, and Forez; and it produces corn, wine, fruits, and more especially excellent chevants. The principal rivers are the Saone, the Rhone, and the Loire. Lyons is the capital town.
