a town of Wiltshire in England, so called, as some think, from its chalky soil. It is an ancient borough by prescription, and sends two members to parliament. It has suffered greatly by fire; particularly, in 1728, there was such a conflagration, that, if the street had not been very broad, the whole town would probably have been burnt down.
