a town of Italy, and capital of a duchy of the same name, situate between the duchies of Mantua and Modena. It is a pretty large place, well fortified, and has also a strong citadel and fort. It has been several times taken and retaken; the last time by the king of Sardinia in 1742. E. Long. 11° 5'.
