NANKING

Volume 7 · 144 words · 1778 Edition

a city of China, and capital of the province of Kiang-nan. It is the largest in China, being 17 miles in circumference, and about three miles distant from the great river Yang-tse Chiang, from which there are canals cut, so large that vessels may enter the town. This place is greatly fallen from its ancient splendour, for it had a magnificent palace, which is quite destroyed, as well as many ancient monuments, and a third part of the city itself is desolate. The streets are narrow, but handsome and well paved, and on each side are shops neatly furnished. The public buildings are mean, except a few temples, the city-gates, and a tower of porcelain 200 feet high. They have several manufactures of silk and wool. The number of the inhabitants are said to be 1,000,000, without without comprehending the garrison of 40,000 men.
