NINEVEH

Volume 7 · 77 words · 1778 Edition

(anc. geogr.), a city of Assyria, which is thought to be one of the most ancient in the world. It was enlarged by Ninus, who some take to be the Nimrod of Moses. When Jonas went to preach against it, he was said to be three days in passing through it. It was a long while the capital of the Assyrian empire; but is now ruined, and it is hard to find the place where it stood.
