Volume 8 · 78 words · 1778 Edition

bastard alaternus; a genus of the monogynia order, belonging to the pentandria class of plants. There are six species, of which three are kept in the gardens of this country; but, by reason of their being natives of warm climates, they require to be kept in pots, and housed in winter. They are all shrubby plants, rising from three to five or six feet high; and adorned with beautiful clusters of white flowers. They are propagated by cuttings.
