in ornithology, a genus belonging to the order of grallae. The beak is subulated, bent back, sharp and flexible at the point; the feet are webbed, and furnished with three toes. There is but one species, viz. the avocetta, a native of the southern parts of Europe. See CCLIV, fig. 9.
