Sugar, or the Sugar-Cane; in botany, a genus of the digna order, belonging to the triandra clas of plants. There is but one species of this genus, viz. the officinarum; a genus of both the Indies, where it grows naturally, and is cultivated for its juice, which when boiled affords the sweet salit called sugar.
