anciently a town of the Hirpini, a people of Apulia; distant about a mile from the rivulet Sabbato, between Beneventum and Salernum. Pliny calls the inhabitants Abellinates, with the epithet Protopi, to distinguish them from the Abellinates Marfi. Now Avellino. E. Long. 15° 20'. Lat. 21'.
