a maritime town in Sweden: it is the capital of the province of Finland, and lies upon the point where the gulfs of Bothnia and Finland unite. It is a good port; and is the see of a bishop, suffragan of Upsal. It has an university, founded by queen Christina in 1640, and endowed with the same privileges as that of Upsal. There is also a school here, which was founded by Gustavus Adolphus, for 300 scholars. The town is tolerably well built, and contains several brick buildings; but the generality are of wood painted red. The inhabitants export linen, corn, and planks. It lies 120 miles north-east from Stockholm. E. Long. 21° 28'. Lat. 60° 50'.
