from ἀγών "combat," and ἄρχω "chief," in antiquity, seems to have been much the same with ἀγον-θέτα; though some suggest a difference, making it the office of the former to preside at and direct the private exercises of the athlete; which they went through by way of practice, before they made their appearance on the public theatres or amphitheatres.
