(anc. geog.), now Marpurg, a city in the landgraviate of Hesse, on the Lahn. According to others, it is Embsen in Westphalia.

an ancient town of Turkey, in Natolia, remarkable for the birth of Strabo the geographer. It is the residence of a bafhaw, and gives its name to the province it stands in, where there are the best wines and the best fruits in Natolia. It is seated near the river Iris or Caflamack; and was anciently the residence of the kings of Cappadocia. E. Long. 36° 10'. N. Lat. 39° 33'.

the name of the northern division of Lesser Asia, lying on the south shore of the Euxine sea in Natolia. It takes its name from Amasia the capital, mentioned in the preceding article.
