in antiquity, solemn feasts held by the Romans the 21st of December, in honour of Angeronia, or Angeronia, the goddess of patience and silence. Festus and Julius Modestus, quoted by Macrobius, Saturn. lib. i. cap. 10., derive the name from angina, "quinzy;" and suppose the goddess to have been thus denominated, because she presided over that disease.—Others suppose it formed from angor, "grief, pain;" to intimate that she gave relief to those afflicted therewith.—Others deduce it from angos, "I press, I clothe," as being reputed the goddess of silence, &c.
