(Tacitus); a people of Germany, situated between the Weser and the Ems, and eastward reaching beyond the Weser, as far as the Cheruscii, on which side they raised a rampart (Tacitus); to the south, having the Tubantes on the Ems, and on the Weser where it bends to the forest Bacenni; to the west, the Ems and the confines of the Bructeri; and to the north, the territory of the Angriovari lay between the Chamaevi and Anfibarii. Ptolemy places them between the Cauchi and Suevi or Catti. Supposed now to contain a part of the county of Schaumburg, the half of the bishopric or principality of Minden; to the south, the greatest part of the bishopric of Osnabrug, the north part of the county of Teclenburg, and a part of the county of Ravensberg. A trace of the name of the people still remains in the appellation *Engern*, a small town in the county of Ravensberg.
