in the Turkish armies, an inferior kind of infantry, which serve as ensigns perdus, and to harass and pillage the enemy's frontiers. The Arcangis are an order inferior to the Janissaries; and when any of them distinguish themselves, are usually preferred into the Janissaries order. They have no pay, but are to subsist on their plunder.
