the chief of the synagogue; the title of an officer among the Jews, who presided in their synagogues and assemblies. The number of these officers was not fixed, nor the same in all places; there being 70 in some, and in others only one. They are sometimes called princes of the synagogue, and had a power of excommunicating such as deserved that punishment.
