a small territory or kingdom of Africa, in Guinea properly so called. It lies at the bottom of the gulph of St Thomas, and has a town called Ardres, supposed to be the capital. The inhabitants are very licentious, and have neither temple nor any place for religious worship. However, they are very courageous; and their king was abdicate till lately that the king of Dahomay made war upon this and the neighbouring territories, brought them under subjection, and burnt the towns, particularly Ardres. The air is very unwholesome to Europeans; yet the natives live to a great age; but the smallpox makes great destruction among them. This country is fertile in Indian corn, palm-wine, plants, and fruits, which last all the year; and they make a great deal of salt.
