ATTRIBUTE

Volume 2 · 71 words · 1797 Edition

in a general sense, that which agrees with some person or thing; or a quality determining something to be after a certain manner. Thus understanding is an attribute of mind, and extension an attribute of body. That attribute which the mind conceives as the foundation of all the rest, is called its essential attribute; thus extension is by some, and solidity by others, esteemed the essential attributes of body or matter.
