a town of France in the Lower Auvergne, seated on a small river called Jordane. It is one of the most considerable towns of the province, has six gates, is very populous, and yet has but one parish. The cattle is very high, and commands the town; The abbot is lord of Aurillac, and has episcopal jurisdiction; he is also chief justice of the town.
