a fortress of Dauphiny belonging to France. It stands in the valley of Greflauaudan, and was built by a Duke of Savoy in 1597. The French took it in 1598, and have kept it ever since. It is seated on the river Isère, in E. Long. 4° 35' N. Lat. 45° O.
