a musical instrument made of metal, in the form of a staff, furnished with metallic rings, which being struck, yielded a kind of harmonical sounds; used by the Armenians in their church-service.

BATIS; a genus of the tetrandra order, belonging to the diacria class of plants, the characters of which are: Of the male, the antherum is four ways imbricated, and both the calyx and corolla are wanting: of the female, the antherum is ovate, the involucrem diphyllos; calyx and corolla wanting; the stigma is bilobate and seifile; the berries connate and four-seeded. There is but one species, the mantina, a native of Jamaica.
