BESSARABIA

Volume 3 · 79 words · 1797 Edition

a territory of Turkey in Europe, lying between Moldavia, the Danube, the Black Sea, and Little Tartary. It is inhabited by independent Tartars, who maintain themselves by their cattle, husbandry, and by robbery. Their religion, manners, and customs, are the same of those with the Crimean Tartars. When there are any forces sent against them, they retire among the mountains near the Black Sea, where it is impossible to come at them on account of the morasses and deserts.
