an ancient and strong city of Germany, in the Electorate of Cologne, and the usual residence of the elector. It is of great consequence in the time of war; because it is situated on the Rhine, in a place where it can stop every thing that comes down that river. It is well fortified by the elector, who has a fine palace and beautiful gardens in the city. E. Long. 7° 5'. N. Lat. 50° 44'.
