a parliament town of Argyllshire in Scotland, seated on the loch of Kilkeran, on the eastern shore of Kintyre or Cantyre, of which it is the capital. It hath a good harbour; and is now a very considerable place, though within these 50 years only a petty fishing town. It has in fact been created by the fishery; for it was appointed the place place of rendezvous for the buffes; and above 260 have been seen in the harbour at once. The inhabitants are reckoned to be upwards of 8000 in number.
