one of the 12 provinces of the kingdom of Naples, in Italy, bounded on the north by the Gulph of Venice, on the east by the Terra di Barri, on the south by the Basilicata and the Farther Principato, and on the west by the county di Molise and a small part of Hither Abruzzo. It is a level country, without trees; the soil sandy, the air hot: the land, however, near the rivers, is fertile in pastures. The capital town is Manfredonia.
