a town of South America, and capital of a province of the same name in Terra Firma, and in the audience of Santa Fe. W. Long. 72. 35° N. Lat. 5° 18'. The province of Caramanta is extended on both sides the river Cauca; and is bounded on the north by the district of Cartagena, on the east by New Grenada, on the south by Popayan, and on the west by Popayan and by the audience of Panama. It is a valley surrounded on every side by very high mountains.
