Volume 4 · 153 words · 1797 Edition

CELANDINE, and HORNED OR PRICKLY POPPY: A genus of the monogynia order, belonging to the pentandra clas of plants; and in the natural method ranking under the 27th order, Rhoeadce. The corolla is tetrapetalous, the calyx diphyllosus, the filiform unicolar and linear. There are six species, none of which are remarkable for their beauty; but one of them, viz. the majus, is an article in the materia medica. It grows on old walls, among rubbish, and in waste shady places. The herb is of a bluish green colour; the root of a deep red; and both contain a gold-coloured juice: their smell is disagreeable, the taste somewhat bitterish, very acrid, burning and biting the mouth; the root is the most acid. The juice takes off warts; cures tettering, ring-worms, and the itch; and, diluted with milk, it confuses opaque white spots on the eye.—Horses, cows, goats, and swine, refuse to eat the herb.
