in a general sense, the act of despising, or the state of being despised.

in law, is disobedience to the rules and orders of a court, which hath power to punish such offence; and as this is sometimes a greater, and sometimes a lesser offence, so it is punished with greater or less punishment, by fine, and sometimes by imprisonment.
