a duchy situated between E. Long. 21. 26. and between N. Lat. 56. 30. and 57. 30. It is bounded by the river Dwina, which divides it from Livonia, on the north; by Lithuania, on the east; by Samogitia, on the south; and by the Baltic sea on the west; being 130 miles long and 30 broad. This duchy was formerly independent, and elected their own duke; but is now subject to Russia.
