a parliament town in Scotland, situated on the river Forth, about 23 miles north-west of Edinburgh. Here is a magnificent house with 13 windows in front, built about the year 1590 by Edward Lord Kinloch, better known in England by the name of Lord Bruce, slain in the noted duel between him and Sir Edward Sackville. Some poor remains of the Cistercian abbey are still to be seen here, founded by Malcolm earl of Fife in 1217. The church was jointly dedicated to the Virgin and St Serf confessor. The revenue at the dissolution was 768 pounds Scots, besides the rents paid in kind. The number of monks, exclusive of the abbot, were nine. W. Long. 3° 34'. N. Lat. 56° 8'.
