in commerce, a Spanish term, much used along the coasts of America, particularly those on the side of the South Sea. It signifies a place which serves some other considerable city farther within land, for a port or place of shipping, i.e. of embarking and disembarking commodities. Thus Calao is the embarcadero of Lima, the capital of Peru; and Arica the embarcadero of Potosi. There are some embarcaderos 40, 50, and even 60 leagues off the city, which they serve in that capacity.
