a town of Germany, in the circle of Upper Saxony, the capital of Thuringia, and subject to the elector of Mentz. It is defended by good ramparts; and has a castle on an eminence, which commands the town. Its inhabitants are almost all Lutherans, but its principal churches belong to the Catholics.
