(Paul), alias Buchlin, a learned Protestant minister, born at Rheinbach in Germany in 1504. He was a schoolmaster at Ixina; but afterwards became a zealous preacher, and wrote many books. The persecution in Germany menacing danger to all who did not profess the Roman doctrines, he and Bucer came over to England in 1549, at the invitation of archbishop Cranmer, to perfect a new translation of the scriptures. Fagius took the Old Testament, and Bucer the New, for their respective parts; but the design was at that time frustrated by the sudden deaths of both. Fagius died in 1550, and Bucer did not live above a year after. Their bodies were dug up and buried in the reign of queen Mary.
