in heraldry, (from the French fixé, i.e. fixed); a term applied to a cross when the lower branch ends in a sharp point: and the reason of it Mackenzie supposes to be, that the primitive Christians were wont to carry crosses with them wherever they went; and when they stopped on their journey at any place, they fixed those portable crosses in the ground for devotion's sake.
