(James), an eminent painter, was born at Antwerp in 1580, and received his chief instructions from Velvet Brughel. He applied himself to the study of landscapes, and went to Italy to improve himself in colouring; and succeeded so happily, that his works are said to be nearly equal to those of Titian.—He was engaged and much cared for at the court of the elector Palatine, and afterwards spent several years of his life in France; where his works met with universal approbation, and he was proportionally well paid for his paintings. Yet by some misconduct he sunk into poverty, and died in the house of an insignificant painter in 1659. He had resided for several years at Rome and Venice, where he acquired that excellent style of colouring and design for which he is so deservedly distinguished.
