(Cornelius), an ancient Roman poet, born at Forum Julium, now called Fréjus, in France. He was a particular favourite with Augustus Cæsar, who made him governor of Egypt; but his maladministration there occasioned his banishment, and the loss of his estate; for grief of which he put an end to his own life. He wrote four books of love-elegies; and Virgil has complimented him in many places.
