GATTON

Volume 7 · 104 words · 1797 Edition

a borough in the county of Surrey, 19 miles from London. It lies under the side of a hill going to Reygate; and is supposed to have been known to the Romans by reason of their coins and other antiquities that have been found here. It is a borough by prescription; and has sent members to parliament ever since the 29th of Henry VI. It was formerly a large town; but is now a mean village, with a small church, and without either fair or market. The members are returned by its constable, who is annually chosen at the lord of the manor's court.
