in ornithology. See ANAS. The goose was held in great esteem amongst the Romans, for having saved the Capitol from the invasion of the Gauls by cackling and clapping its wings. Geese were kept in the temple of Juno; and the senators, when they entered upon their office, provided meat for them. There was also an annual feast at Rome, at which they carried a silver image of a goose in state; and hanged a dog, to punish that animal because he did not bark at the arrival of the Gauls.
