turnsole: A genus of the polygynia order, belonging to the pentandria clas of plants; and in the natural method ranking under the 41st order, Alperifolia. The corolla is falver-shaped and quinquefied, with lesser dents intersected alternately; the throat closed up by small arches formed in the corolla itself. There are a number of species, all of them natives of warm countries. Only one, called the tricocum, grows in Europe; and is a native of France, Spain, and Italy. It is only remarkable for the property of its berries, of which an account is given under Colour-Making, n°36.
