an ancient city of Turkey in Europe, and in Romania, with the see of an archbishop of the Grecian church, and a sea-port. It was a very famous place in former times, and there are still some remains of its ancient splendor. Theodore Lascaris took it from David Comnenus, emperor of Trebizon; when it fell into the hands of the Genoese, but Mahomet II. took it from them; since which time it has been in the possession of the Turks. It is near the sea. E. Long. 27° 48'. N. Lat. 40° 27'.
