(James), a learned mathematician of the academy at Berlin, and a member of the academy of sciences at Paris, was born at Bafl in 1678. He was a great traveller, and for six years was professor of mathematics at Padua. He afterwards went to Moscow, being invited thither by the Czar in 1724. At his return to his native country, he was made professor of morality and natural law at Basil; and died there in 1733. He wrote several mathematical works.
