a town of Middlesex, 10 miles from London. It is situated on a heath of the same name; and belongs to two parishes, the north side of the street to Heaton, and the south side to Ilford Heath. It is situated on the edge of a heath of the same name, and near it are powder-mills. It has fairs on Trinity-Monday, and Monday after September 29. Here is a charity-school and a chapel. In this place was formerly a convent of mendicant friars, who, by their institution, were to beg alms for the ransom of captives taken by the infidels.—The heath is noted for robberies and horse-races.
