HYLA

Volume 9 · 46 words · 1797 Edition

(anc. geog.), a river of Mysia Minor, famous for Hylas the favourite boy of Hercules, who was carried down the stream and drowned. It is said to run by Prusa; whence it seems to be the same with the Rhindacus, which runs north-west into the Propontis.
