Volume 9 · 73 words · 1797 Edition

in antiquity, a kind of mournful song, used upon occasion of death, or any other affecting accident. Hence the Greek proverbs had their original, ἡμεῖς οἱ ὀξύτεροι, or ὑπερβαίνων, i.e. more sad or colder than a jalemus, ἐστὶ τὸ ἄγαν ἐπιβαίνων, worthy to be ranked among jalemuses.

JAMADAR: An officer of horse or foot, in Hindustan. Also the head or superintendent of the Peons in the Sawaury, or train of any great man.
