JEDBURGH

Volume 9 · 106 words · 1797 Edition

a parliament-town of Scotland, capital of Tiviotdale or Roxburghshire, is situated nearly in the middle of the county, on the banks of the river Jed, whence it derives its name. It is well built and populous, and has a good market for corn and cattle. On the west side of the river, near its junction with the Teviot, stand the beautiful ruins of an abbey founded by David I., a part of which ancient pile still serves for a parish-church.—Jedburgh is the seat of the sheriff's court and presbytery; and is a barony in the family of Lothian, whose eldest son is called Earl of Ancrum.
